When is it justified?
Eyelid correction might be performed on the upper and lower eyelids separately or on the same occasion. As you are aging, the skin of your upper eyelid might get thinner and start drooping over your eyelashes, hanging in your field of vision. The weakening of the supporting structures under your lower eyelids might cause puffy bags under your eyes, making your face tired-looking all the time. However, the surgical intervention can smoothen the skin around your eyes. Our plastic surgeon examines you during a preliminary consultation and shows you his reference works to illustrate the expected best outcome.
Before the surgery, you have to undergo a complete and throughout screening. To make the process more comfortable for you, we perform all the necessary screenings at our Institute in the same place and time. Besides laboratory tests, our surgeon might recommend you to have an ECG examination and an ultrasound screening. You also have to have a consultation with the anesthesiologist before the surgery. Your plastic surgeon will also inform you about the advised temporary adjustments in your lifestyle to speed up your recovery.
The course of the intervention
For the correction of the upper eyelid, an incision is made along the natural crease, and excessive tissue is removed through this. In case of the lower eyelid, the incision is made below the line of the eyelashes through which the soft tissue is removed and the sagging muscle is lifted. Not everyone has bags under their eyes that have to be dealt with, but if you have them, they can be removed through a hidden incision from the direction of the orbit. Eyelid surgery is usually performed in local anesthesia, as your assistance is needed throughout the process: you must be able to open or close your eyes when the plastic surgeon instructs you to do so. At the end of the surgery adhesive bonding is put on the area to prevent wound infection and edemas.
Recovery and aftercare
You can return home after only six-hours of monitoring. Your sutures will be removed 5 days after the surgery. Although we always use absorbable sutures, eye surgeries are the exceptions to this rule: the stitches have to be very tiny, and having the marks on display would ruin your appearance for a long time. Your eye area will be swollen and bloodshot for days, but a chamomile compress can make it better. Prop up your head for sleeping and avoid strenuous physical activities, bending down and using make-up for 2 weeks. Even after this period, return to your previous lifestyle gradually, but 3 weeks after the surgery you can have some light exercise. However, do not have sexual intercourse for 6 weeks. It is not recommended to visit a tanning salon or sauna for two months. Your control examinations will be scheduled for the 7th and 14th days after the intervention, and two additional ones during week 6 and 12.
The risk of complications is very low, but if there is any, it can only be wound infection, whey and blood accumulation or a keloid scar.
