You keep on feeling energetic throughout the days. Pregnancy fills you with joy, and you are floating above the ground with happiness.
The expectant mother
Your body circulates more blood than before, and that makes your complexion appear youthful and a bit oilier than usual as a side effect of pregnancy hormones. Thus your complexion shines, which is a distinctive trait of expectant mothers during the second trimester. You might tend to feel a nice and ticklish sensation in your belly as the baby moves more and more often.
He is 16 cm and weighs 130-140 grams. You might be able to see him put his thumb into his mouth because of the sucking reflex. It is also the time when the doctor can determine the baby’s sex quite accurately. Behind his closed eyelids his eyes become capable of eye movements which will develop into winking later on. His nails grow a great deal, his body is covered in silky fluff and his movements are coordinated.
The AFP test is done during the 16-17 week, and it consists of measuring the amount of alpha fetoprotein in your blood. This protein is produced by the liver of the fetus and it gets into the mother’s blood through the amniotic fluid and the placenta. A difference from the average level of AFP might signify developmental abnormalities such as neural tube or abdominal disorders, spina bifida or a twin pregnancy. If the AFP level is not within the average levels, more examinations must be performed (for e.g. a second AFP screening or fetal ultrasound). The screening for Hepatitis B is done during these weeks as well.
Apart from the above recommended examinations, it is also advised to go through a health assessment that includes general medical examinations and eye tests. The latter is especially important for women who wear glasses or contact lenses. If you suffer from any kind of chronic disease or have a family history of it, let your doctor know.
Having a healthy diet becomes more and more important. It is recommended to participate in a pregnancy dietetics and lifestyle consultation with our specialist so he can plan a personalized diet for you. Your feet have to carry increasing weight, so you should pay attention when picking out shoes, and try to opt for comfortable pairs with flat heels.
