Which week?

Week 21

Is it a girl or a boy? It can be determined for sure now, the question is whether you want to know it before he or she is born. Do not give credit to prognoses based on the shape of your belly.

The expectant mother

These days, many women start to worry about their increasing weight. During the next 10 weeks, you are going to gain the half of your final weight. Keep avoiding sugary food and drinks and do some light exercise such as jogging, swimming, and if you have not started it yet, it is time to try maternity yoga. Besides keeping your weight gain in control, maternity yoga and maternity exercises also help you prepare for giving birth by teaching you stretching and breathing techniques. Avoiding excess weight is also important because it might cause varicose veins, feet and back pains.

The baby

The previously rapid growth of the fetus slows down even more, but the development of his organs continues. The amount of fat under his still very thin skin is growing, but it is still pink as a result of diaphanous veins. The baby weighs approximately 370 grams this week, and he will keep getting fatter and stronger. Now he is swimming and moving around in the amniotic fluid all the time. Around the end of the second trimester he settles into a fix position, which tends to be upside down. However, there are babies who only turn down at the end of the third trimester, and 3-4% of them stay in a breech position. The newest function of the amniotic fluid is to supply the baby with sugar who can now drink and process the gulps he takes. However, he is still nourished through the placenta. The bone marrow starts to overtake the cell production role from the fetal liver and spleen. The production of white blood cells also starts.

Examinations

Next week you will have to attend your usual prenatal care consultation, where you can listen to the heartbeat of your baby. If you have any questions, feel free to collect them and write them down so as not to forget any of them until the consultation.

Doctor’s advice

If your feet are getting watery drink a lot of liquid and prop your feet up as often as you can. This way, you can relieve you blood vessels and prevent the development of varicose veins.

Lifestyle

During pregnancy you might encounter some nuisances which might cause you to feel unpleasant at times, but these are the indicators that your body is getting prepared for giving birth. One of these inconveniences is back pain. The otherwise rigid joints of your pelvis relax to help the baby come out easier when the time comes. This and the size of your belly change the static situation of your posture. Pregnant women often try to improperly compensate for this by pulling their shoulders back and pushing their neck forward a little, which results in the large-scale bending of the spine: back muscles are strained constantly causing a sharp pain. The best solution is prevention regarding this as well, which means you must strengthen your abdominal and back muscles. If you have not done it yet, start to frequent maternity exercise classes. Also, try not to push your pelvis forward and keep your lower back from being concave. Watch your weight, as the heavier you are, the more pressure your spine and muscles are under. This is not the time to wear high heels: you should opt for comfortable shoes. To relax your back muscles and to recharge we recommend getting maternity massage.
