CTG

A CTG examination is done in order to monitor fetal heart functions and the contractions of the womb; the results are recorded on a running piece of paper. The aim of the test is to assess respiratory function, capacity and general fetal condition and movement, or during giving birth, to register fetal heart functions and uterine contractions (labor pains) simultaneously.

Screening is especially important during the last weeks of the pregnancy: from the characteristics of the resulting CTG signs, possible disorders of the placental functions or the blood circulation of the umbilical cord can be deduced.

A CTG measures heart function with ultrasound technology. The portable device allows the mother in labor to move or walk around freely during the examination; it can even be used in case of water birth.
