Gastroenterology Screenings

The main cause of many diseases of civilization is a weakened digestive system. The workings of the immune system are mostly done in the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, absorption, digestion, detoxification and the utilization of nutrients are also key to our health and well-being. Gastrointestinal cancer is the most common type of the disease in Hungary, the most common examples including colon cancer, stomach cancer and liver cancer.

It is of utmost importance to consult a gastroenterologist if you have any recurring symptoms, for e.g.:  abdominal discomfort, distension, belching, diarrhea, constipation, sudden changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, abdominal pain.

A General Gastroenterological Screening includes

A general screening by a gastroenterologist

Laboratory tests

Abdominal ultrasound

Stool sampling

If needed, examinations with screening devices (gastroscope, colonoscope, rectoscope)

Special Gastroenterology Screening Packages

Helicobacter Screening

The presence of a Helicobacter pylori infection can be identified using several methods: by measuring antibodies in a blood sample, by a breath (or UBT) test that measures the isotope content of exhaled air or by examining tissue samples taken from the lining of the stomach during gastroscopy. A Helicobacter pylori infection might cause peptic ulcer, inflammations in the stomach and hyperacidity.

Food Allergy and Intolerance Screening Tests

In most cases food allergy only causes minor symptoms or only a feeling of slight discomfort. However, recurring allergic reactions put a huge strain on the body and might start some degenerative processes that lead to the development of a more serious condition.

Examination types:

Alimentrary allergen blood panel

Hydrogen breath test for lactose intolerance

Screening for Coeliac Disease and EMA

Screening for Colon Cancer

There is a distressingly increasing number of colon and rectal cancer patients in Hungary: 7-8000 new cases are diagnosed each year. After the age of 40, the growth of polyps becomes quicker and more frequent, so it is highly recommended to undergo screening.

The screening consists of a stool test, an abdominal ultrasound and a colonoscopy. The latter can be performed in anesthesia on request.

Screening for Viral Infections

Examples include salmonella, worm infection or Coli bacterial accumulation in the digestive system.  Such infections can be identified from specific stool culture, intestinal parasite examination or detecting worm eggs in the stool.

Pancreatic Function Tests

Pancreatic inflammation can be acute or chronic and might be accompanied by high or low blood sugar level. Pancreatic diseases often remain undiagnosed, thus it is advised to have glucose and starch tolerance test, which helps to indirectly deduce pancreatic dysfunction.

Parts of the examination:

Starch Tolerance Test

Glucose Tolerance Test and ATT index calculation

Measuring the level of digestive enzymes in blood and urine

Screening for B12 vitamin deficiency: B12 vitamin deficiency leads to pernicious anemia or might cause other neurodegenerative symptoms.
