Neurology

Neurology, just like psychiatry, is a medial specialty concerned with the diagnostics and treatment of nervous system disorders. But contrary to psychiatry, it deals with organic afflictions and their therapy, rather than mental illnesses.

The following diseases belong to the field of neurology: neurodevelopmental disorders, diseases of cerebral circulation, carotid artery disorders, fainting, epilepsy, dyskinesia (involuntary tremors, Parkinson’s disease), inflammatory neurological diseases (meningitis and encephalitis), immunologic disorders (sclerosis multiplex), dementia (Alzheimer’s disease, cerebrospinal fluid circulation disorders), pain syndromes, diseases of the peripheral nervous system, neurological injuries (cranial and spinal traumas), neurological complications of metabolic disorders.

Neurological disorders have diverse in causes and symptoms. The most frequent complaints are numbness, paralysis, visual impairment, dizziness, balance and movement disorders, chronic pain, seizures, loss of consciousness, certain thinking and memory problems.

As neurological disorders can be accompanied by diseases of other organs, a neurologic examination is often part of a general medical check-up. Conversely, in case of neurological complaints, other specialties such as internal medicine, optometry, neurosurgery and rheumatology also have to be involved in order to produce an accurate diagnosis.

A neurological examination usually lasts 30-60 minutes. After reviewing the medical history of the patient and a short general orientation (checking blood pressure, the heart, veins, lungs and abdomen) the neurological system is inspected thoroughly. In some cases targeted, additional testing might also be necessary.

Neurological conditions can be treated by medication in the form of pills, injections and infusion, or by electrical stimulation and physiotherapy.
