The expectant mother
You might experience sudden hot flashes, sweating and higher blood pressure than usual because of your hormones. But these symptoms will cease after you give birth and your hormone balance will be back to normal. You will not be able to feel the movements of your baby until a few weeks later, so be patient. Mothers who already have children are able to make a distinction easier between bowel movements and the baby’s movements. That is why they might feel the baby’s kicks earlier than those who experience pregnancy for the first time.
The fetus is now approximately 14cm long and weighs 100 grams. He is able to make several facial expressions now. During this week his ear bones are hardening, so the baby can hear his mother’s heartbeat and bowel movements now, but does not really perceive the noises of the outer environment. His hair and eyelashes are also growing. His bones contain more calcium now, but his ribs are still transparent. His taste buds are working, so he can feel the taste of whatever you have consumed. The tastes the child experiences as a fetus are stored in his memories and will affect his food preferences later.
There are no compulsory examinations for this week either. However, you might have scheduled a general monthly check-up for this week with your doctor, which consists of a blood pressure examination, urinalysis and weight measurement.
As your fetus can hear now, listen to music often and keep talking to him. It is important to start establishing the parent-child relationship as early as this. The voices and music the baby hears during this period will have a calming effect on him after birth as well.
In order to ensure the development of your baby’s bones and teeth, you must pay attention to sufficient calcium intake: the child’s milk teeth will develop from the fetal teeth buds. If you have not started to exercise yet, now it is high time to change this.
